Buying a mobility scooter is a great choice that gives you the independence to come and go on your own.
You need to consider a few things before you get started. How far do you want to go? The size of batteries in a scooter determines the distance you can travel. What kind of terrain are you going to travel on? Are you traveling down gravel pathways or trail cruising in the parks? Are there many hills in your area? Where do you live and where are you going to park it? It is important that your scooter will fit in your environment, perhaps an elevator is involved. What is your height and weight?
It is our goal to make certain all mobility equipment drivers are safe out there. The following tips help you get there and home safely.
Wear bright clothing. Have a bright safety flag. Put a reflective vest on the back of your mobility scooter or power chair seat. Add a flashing bicycle light to the top of your flag.
If you are driving at top speed you cannot often react quickly enough to a situation.
If you are crossing a street or passing over a driveway, make sure drivers see you. If you are unsure whether a driver sees you, stop and wait, regardless of who has the right of way.
Make sure your Scooter or Powerchair is in good working condition and batteries are charged up. Power equipment requires regular maintenance just like changing the oil in your car.
You are a pedestrian and must follow pedestrian rules. Obey all traffic signals intended for pedestrians. Stay on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk to travel on, drive against traffic and be as visible as possible.
Pay attention to your environment. Be conscious of steep curb cuts, broken sidewalks, uneven surfaces, utility poles on sidewalks, bus stop benches and construction on sidewalks. BE COURTEOUS to other pedestrians traveling on the same sidewalk. Slow down when passing others and move over when possible.
Some medication, drugs and/or alcohol may affect your skill, reaction time and judgement when operating your scooter or powerchair.
Using the scooter at dawn, dusk or in the dark is not advisable. If you must drive in dark conditions, make sure you are wearing reflective garments, turn your headlights on and secure extra lighting on the highest point of your equipment to insure drivers see you.
